Tom Poulos Of Thornton Tomasetti Receives Publication Award Of Merit From Structural Engineers Association Of Illinois

Chicago, June 10, 2008 - Thomas D. Poulos, P.E., S.E., S.E.C.B., M.L.S.E., principal in Thornton Tomasetti, Inc.'s Chicago office, was awarded the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois' (SEAOI) Publication Award of Merit at its annual Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards banquet on June 7th in Chicago.

SEAOI's annual Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards recognize creative achievement and innovation in structural engineering design, or in the publication of a significant work contributing to the advancement of structural engineering. Poulos was honored for his paper "Designing for Effects of Creep and Shrinkage in High-Rise Concrete Buildings," which was co-authored by Domingo J. Carriera, Ph.D, S.E., P.E.

Poulos joined Thornton Tomasetti in 1997 and has 20 years of structural engineering experience. He has a diverse background in all types of structures including those requiring design-build delivery. As the firm's Aviation Sector leader, Poulos' portfolio includes Memphis International Airport, Federal Express Airbus A380 Hangar Facility, Memphis, Tenn.; Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, North Terminal Redevelopment, Romulus, Mich; Indianapolis International Airport, Midfield Terminal, Indianapolis, Ind.; and O'Hare International Airport, United Airlines, Terminal 1 Curbside Addition and South Building Addition, Chicago, Ill.

Poulos received an M.S.E. degree and a post-graduate certificate in earthquake and wind engineering design from Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago and a B.S.C.E. degree from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind. He is a licensed structural engineer in Illinois; a licensed professional engineer in Illinois, Michigan, Colorado and Tennessee; is registered with the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying; and is certified to practice structural engineering by the Structural Engineering Certification Board.

Poulos is a member of the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois (SEAOI), where he served as chairman of the Continuing Education Committee from 2000 to 2004; the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI); the Airport Consultants Council (ACC), where he served as a member on the Committee on Terminal Design; the American Institute of Steel Construction; American Concrete Institute and the American Institute of Steel Construction, TC-10 Stability Committee.

Poulos is also a former adjunct assistant professor of civil and architectural engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology.
